Children (5-12 years)

Children are greatly influenced by those around them—at home, school, and in the community—for better or worse. The sooner a child is able to receive support and strategies to deal with their challenges, the better equipped he or she will be in the future.

Play and creative expression provides opportunities for children to express feelings and wishes, explore relationships, describe experiences and achieve self-fulfillment. Children are in a constant state of change as they grow and develop. Challenges come in many different forms, such as:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • unhelpful attachment
  • fears (darkness, water, death)
  • interpersonal conflict (at home or school)
  • birth of a sibling
  • grief, loss or separation (person or pet)
  • lack of emotional control
  • separation/divorce
  • lack of confidence
  • communication
  • fostering or adoption
  • interpersonal relationships
  • difficulties at school
  • adjusting to a new living situation

When working with children, there is often a need to work closely with the parent/legal guardian and possibly other people in the child’s life (i.e., family members, foster parent, teacher). This will occur only with the child’s knowledge and the parent/legal guardian’s permission.

Children can grow when they are encouraged and empowered to explore freely and discover their inner and outer resources. Healthy child development depends on the relationships that children have with their parents and other important people in their lives that take place in a nurturing, secure and loving environment.
